How much does a direct cremation cost?
The cost of a cremation varies depending on the provider, and the type of cremation you choose. From Simplicity, a direct cremation costs £995 including transportation, preparation of the deceased, a simple coffin, cremation fees and doctor's fees - and is available throughout mainland Great Britain. Direct cremation prices are significantly lower than those of traditional funerals. If you're looking for low cost cremation services, a direct cremation may be for you.
What is a direct cremation?
We find a lot of people ask us the question, 'what is a direct cremation?' A direct cremation, also referred to as a direct funeral or cremation without ceremony, provides a simple alternative to a traditional funeral. A direct cremation usually takes place without the presence of any mourners and is ideal for those who do not want to have a service or ceremony prior to the cremation. If you'd like to learn more about this type of cremation, read our Direct Cremation Guide.
How much does a direct cremation cost?
A direct cremation is one of the most affordable funeral options in the UK, with the cost of a direct cremation typically being up to 73% less (or £2,749 in monetary terms) than the average cost of a cremation*.
A direct cremation costs on average £1,712** in the UK and does not usually include a funeral service, a procession or the provision of a hearse or limousines.
To arrange a direct cremation, you will need to consider:
- cremation fees
- collection and transportation of the deceased
- provision of a coffin
- in some cases, doctor’s fees (around half of clients would expect to pay this)
When it comes to the final cost of a direct cremation, some providers will charge extra for mileage fees, bariatric care and doctor’s fees.
A Simplicity Cremation includes all of the above cremation costs as part of our direct cremation package and is arranged over the phone by our team of professional funeral arrangers.
Our Unattended Funeral costs £995 and also includes:
- collection of your loved one a few days prior to the cremation from anywhere within mainland Great Britain^
- preparation at our quality mortuary facilities
^Should your loved one need to be brought into care sooner than within working hours (for example, if they are resting outside of a hospital or coroners), an additional charge will be incurred to cover the additional care in our quality mortuary facilities until the day of the cremation.
The ashes will be respectfully scattered in our gardens of remembrance or can be returned to you in a simple container at an additional cost, within 6 weeks of the cremation taking place.
Please consider that unlike a traditional funeral where you are often invoiced after the funeral has taken place, direct cremation costs will need to be paid before the cremation can take place.
Please note that should collection be required outside of working hours (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm), an additional fee will be charged.

Direct cremation services available throughout all of mainland Great Britain
Our direct cremation costs remain the same no matter where in mainland Great Britain you live. This is different to many providers who only offer their funeral services within a specific region, or add mileage fees to conduct funerals outside of a certain radius.
Whilst our direct cremation prices are considerably less than the average funeral, rest assured you and your loved one will receive the highest level of care. Our nationwide network of facilities ensures a consistently high quality of service. As part of one of the UK’s most respected funeral groups, we’re the only truly nationwide direct cremation provider that has its own staff, specialised vehicles, mortuaries and crematoria.
As recognition of our high standards of service, we were awarded Best Direct Cremation Provider in the 2018 Good Funeral Awards.
We also offer direct cremations that you can attend
We appreciate that an unattended direct cremation will not suit everyone, which is why we offer low cost cremations to suit every need and budget. As such, we also provide funerals with the option to attend.
If you and a small number of people would like to attend a cremation without a full service, our Intimate Funeral allows a short time in the chapel for up to 12 people, to reflect or say a few words.
If you’d prefer something a little closer to a traditional funeral, our Attended Funeral allows a full length service with a ceremony led by the family. Our attended funeral will take place at a crematoria local to the place of rest, and allows you to choose an available date and time on a working weekday that suits you and your family. Our team of funeral professionals can assist you with the running order of the day, from music to any readings or eulogies, to the closing of the ceremony. They can also provide advice on engaging with the services of a minister or officiant if you wish.
Both options include the return of ashes at no additional cost.
Our intimate funeral costs just £1,395 and our attended funeral service starts at £1,895.
