Can you attend a direct cremation?

Can you attend a direct cremation?

Generally, no. A direct cremation is an unattended service; the deceased is cremated privately, without mourners present or a ceremony. This is what makes it simpler and more affordable than a traditional funeral.

At Simplicity we only offer direct cremations and so there’s no funeral service, just a cremation with no loved ones in the crematorium.

Once the ashes are returned, families are free to arrange a memorial or celebration of life in their own time; creating a more personal and meaningful tribute to their loved one.

What is an attended direct cremation?

Some direct cremation companies have introduced a hybrid attended direct cremation option, where a small group of people can spend between 15 - 45 minutes in the chapel to say their goodbyes.

Like a standard unattended direct cremation it remains a scaled back funeral, with no procession, pallbearers or hearse etc.

Not all direct cremation providers offer this option. Those that do charge an additional fee, which varies by provider. Pure Cremation, for example, offer attended options starting from £395 (for up to 12 people).

As attended direct cremations cost more than a standard unattended service, families primarily motivated by cost may find a standard direct cremation, followed by a separate memorial, the more practical choice.

Pure Cremation

Pure Cremation offer attended options on top of their £1,595 direct cremation. Prices start from £395 for up to 12 attendees (£1,990 total), £665 for up to 100 attendees (£2,260 total), or £995 at third‑party crematoria such as those in Scotland (£2,590 total).

Aura Funerals

Aura Funerals offer two attended direct cremation options: £2,095 for a short 10‑minute service with up to 15 attendees, or £2,695 for a longer 40‑minute service accommodating a larger group.

Memoria Funerals

Memoria Funerals offer a simple attended cremation for £2,045, allowing up to 25 family members and friends to be present.

Simplicity Cremations’ approach: Keeps things simple and costs low

A direct cremation is traditionally unattended, with no service, mourners or ceremony. As detailed, some providers now offer limited attended options for an additional fee, but these add cost and complexity.

While this attended model may suit some families, at Simplicity we focus on a more straightforward approach. We offer unattended direct cremation only, priced at £1,399, significantly lower than the attended options listed above. (Please note, the above providers do also offer a cheaper unattended option).

By choosing an unattended service, families can keep costs down while retaining complete flexibility. This means you can dedicate your time, energy and budget into arranging a personal send-off at a time and place that feels right, creating a farewell that truly reflects your loved one.

FAQs:

What to do instead of attending a cremation?

If you can’t attend a direct cremation, there are still many different meaningful ways to say goodbye. Many families choose to hold a separate celebration of life, arrange a small gathering, or plan a personal ashes‑scattering ceremony.

Others create private tributes such as memory books, playlists or photo displays. This flexibility is one reason an unattended direct cremation can be a thoughtful, practical choice.

Which is right for me: attended or unattended direct cremation?

Attended options could suit families who want some time at the crematorium, but they cost more and offer limited personalisation. A more standard unattended direct cremation, like that offered by Simplicity, is more affordable and gives you complete flexibility to hold a memorial later, in your own way.

Many people also choose an unattended option through a prepaid funeral plan, locking in today’s rate and avoiding passing the cost onto loved ones.

Why choose an unattended direct cremation?

Many families choose an unattended direct cremation because it’s simple, dignified and far more affordable than a traditional funeral. Without a service, procession or mourners present, costs stay low and arrangements are handled quickly and respectfully.

It also gives families complete flexibility, as you can hold a personal memorial or celebration of life later, at a time and place that truly reflects your loved one.

For those who value simplicity, privacy or cost‑certainty, an unattended cremation is often the most practical and meaningful choice.

How does an unattended direct cremation work, step-by-step?

An unattended direct cremation is a simple, dignified process carried out without a funeral service. At Simplicity, it works like this:

  • Call Simplicity anytime; our team is available 24/7
  • We collect your loved one in a private vehicle
  • They’re cared for at our dedicated local care centre
  • A funeral specialist makes all arrangements on your behalf
  • The cremation takes place unattended, with no service or mourners present
  • Ashes are returned or scattered - you can collect them, have them hand‑delivered (for an additional fee unless via a funeral plan), or choose scattering in our garden of remembrance
  • You can then hold a separate memorial at a time and place that feels right for family and friends

Is a direct cremation respectful if no one attends?

Yes, an unattended direct cremation is still a respectful and dignified way to say goodbye. Your loved one is cared for by professionals throughout, even though no mourners are present.

While it may not suit every cultural or religious tradition, many families value its simplicity and lower cost, freeing them to create a more personal memorial later on.

How much does a direct cremation cost?

The cost of a direct cremation varies by provider, but it’s generally the most affordable type of funeral.

At Simplicity, an unattended direct cremation costs £1,399 when someone has passed away and you need to arrange a funeral, while our prepaid funeral plans start from £1,799.

Some providers are cheaper and others more expensive, but what’s included in the headline price can differ, for example, collection fees, return of ashes, or oversized coffins may or may not be included. Therefore, it’s important to look beyond the headline figure to understand the true value of what you’re paying for.

For a full breakdown of typical costs and what to look out for, see our guide to direct cremation costs in the UK.

Can you purchase an unattended direct cremation with a prepaid funeral plan?

Yes, you can buy a prepaid funeral plan that covers the full cost of an unattended or attended direct cremation.

Unattended is the more traditional and affordable form of direct cremation, and a prepaid plan lets you lock in today’s price, protect your family from rising costs, and ensure your wishes are followed.

Many people choose this option because it keeps things simple and leaves loved ones free to arrange a more personal tribute. At Simplicity our direct cremation funeral plans start from £1,799.
