Best direct cremation UK

With direct cremations now accounting for 21% of all UK funerals*, the market has never been more competitive, or more confusing. Prices vary, inclusions differ and not all providers are created equal.
This guide cuts through the noise. We've assessed the UK's leading providers across a comprehensive set of criteria - going beyond headline price to give you a clear, honest picture of who truly offers the best direct cremation.
We focus specifically on 'at-need' direct cremations; arranged when a loved one has passed away. If you're looking to plan ahead, see our dedicated cheapest prepaid funeral plans UK guide.
How we chose the best direct cremations
To ensure a fair, transparent and consistent comparison, each provider was assessed against the same four criteria:
- Direct cremation cost - The price of arranging a direct cremation at short notice, when no funeral plan is in place
- What's included as standard - A brief summary of the provider and detailed breakdown of what is and isn't included in the headline price, to provide a clearer picture of true value
- Trustpilot rating - The Trustpilot score and number of verified customer reviews, giving a reliable indicator of service quality and consistency
- Crematorium network - Whether the provider owns and operates its own crematoria or relies on third-party facilities, and how this affects locality and quality control

Direct cremation cost
When comparing the UK’s leading direct cremations, price is naturally one of the first things people consider.
Below is a clear ordering of providers from cheapest to most expensive, based on their at‑need direct cremation prices:
| Provider | Price | |
| 1 | Celebration of Life | £1,095 |
| 2 | With Grace | £1,140 |

We've created a comprehensive direct cremation costs UK guide if you require a more detailed breakdown of costs.
Why price alone shouldn’t decide your choice
Although cost is an important factor, it should never be the only consideration. Headline prices can be misleading because providers differ in what they include as standard.
Key areas such as delivery of ashes, 24‑hour collection, oversized coffins, and medical device removal can add meaningful costs if not included upfront.
This is why our guide evaluates providers across a full set of criteria, not just price. Let's dig further into the detail.
What's included in a direct cremation?
What a provider includes as standard, and what comes at an additional cost, can significantly change the cost of a direct cremation.
The below breaks down exactly what each provider includes, helping you make a fair, like-for-like comparison and identify which direct cremation best meets your needs.
A few elements worth paying particular attention to:
- Hand delivery of ashes - Some providers include this as standard, others charge a fee
- Removal of medical devices (i.e.pacemaker) - This is not always included and can carry a sizeable additional charge with some providers
- Enlarged coffin - A sometimes large additional cost with several providers, which can catch families off guard
- Out-of-hours or urgent collection - Particularly relevant for at-need funeral arrangements, where speed and availability can matter most

What's included - The verdict
As the above clearly shows, not all direct cremations are equal. The headline price is only part of the picture and what a provider includes as standard can change the true cost.
With Grace is a good illustration of this. At £1,140, theirs is one of the cheapest headline prices on our list, but it's one of the few providers that doesn't include 24/7 customer support as standard.
Factor in urgent non-hospital collection (£295), hand delivery of ashes (£100) and an enlarged coffin (£300), and the true cost for a family requiring any of these extras could rise considerably.
By contrast, Simplicity Cremations (£1,399) includes an enlarged coffin as standard, offers 24/7 customer support and charges £275 for urgent non-hospital collection, £20 less than With Grace.
Although the most expensive, Pure Cremation stands out as a strong offering which includes hand delivery of ashes, removal of medical devices and an enlarged coffin all as standard, with urgent non-hospital collection (£260) as the only notable additional charge.
The key takeaway is simple, always look beyond the headline price.
Trustpilot customer rating
Trustpilot customer feedback is an important indicator families can use when comparing direct cremations.
Unlike marketing claims or price lists, independent customer reviews reflect real experiences, showing how consistently a provider delivers high quality care and reliability at a difficult time.
Crucially, both the Trustpilot score and review volume matter. A high rating becomes more meaningful when supported by a large sample of reviews over time.
| Provider | Rating | Reviews | |
| 1 | Aura Funerals | 4.9 | 1,360 |
| 2 | Distinct Cremations | 4.9 | 324 |
| 3 | With Grace | 4.9 | 748 |
| 4 | Memoria | 4.9 | 3,959 |
| 5 | Celebration of Life | 4.9 | 148 |
| 6 | Simplicity Cremations | 4.8 | 476 |
| 7 | Pure Cremation | 4.8 | 32,733 |
| 8 | Crystal Cremations | 4.6 | 20 |
| 9 | Co-op Funeralcare | 4.6 | 5,048 |
Across the providers reviewed, Aura, Distinct Cremations, With Grace, Memoria, and Celebration of Life all hold an 'Excellent' 4.9/5 rating, demonstrating consistently strong customer satisfaction.
Pure Cremation, with 32,733 reviews, stands out for sheer volume, offering the strongest statistical reliability. Memoria (3,959), Co‑op Funeralcare (5,048) and Aura (1,360) also provide substantial sample sizes that reinforce trust.
As a result of using the Feefo customer review platform until recently, Simplicity have a smaller sample size (476), however they've also secured an 'Excellent' 4.8 / 5 rating.
At the other end of the scale, Crystal has just 20 reviews, meaning its 4.6 rating is based on a small sample and therefore less reliable.
Co-op Funeralcare holds a 4.6 rating, the lowest among the providers reviewed, though this is based on a large review base and reflects their full range of funerals, not direct cremation alone.
Trustpilot customer ratings are correct at the point of publication.
Crematorium network comparison
When choosing a direct cremation provider, the size and ownership of their crematorium network is often overlooked, but it can make a difference to both the quality and locality of the service.
The larger a provider's crematorium network, the greater the chance of having a crematorium local to you. This means your loved one is less likely to be transported a significant distance.
Providers with their own crematoria can manage the entire process end to end; from collection and care of the deceased, through to storage and then cremation.
This gives greater operational and quality control at every stage, with no reliance on external partners whose standards may vary.
Provider crematorium networks at a glance:
| Provider | Crematoria | |
| 1 | Simplicity Cremations | 45 |
| 2 | Distinct Cremations | 42 |
| 3 | Memoria | 11 |
| 4 | Pure Cremation | 2 |
| 5 | Celebration of Life | 0 |
| 6 | With Grace | 0 |
| 7 | Aura Funerals | 0 |
| 8 | Co-op Funeralcare | 0 |
| 9 | Crystal | 0 |
The data above highlights a clear divide between providers. Simplicity Cremations and Distinct Cremations stand out as the two providers with the most extensive owned crematorium networks with 45 and 42 sites respectively.
Whilst five of the nine providers on our list operate no crematoria of their own, relying on third-party facilities.
Simplicity Cremations' network of 45 owned crematoria is the largest of any direct cremation specialist in the UK, giving families a great chance of a crematorium genuinely local to them, and ensuring complete end-to-end control.
Although Co-op Funeralcare don't operate their own crematoria, they do own facilities at a regional level. For example, Central Co-op owns and operates the Bretby Crematorium in Derbyshire, used for direct cremations.
For families where locality and continuity of care matter, this is a meaningful differentiator, and one that headline price comparisons alone wouldn't reveal.
Choosing the best direct cremation for you
Selecting the best direct cremation is about finding the right fit for your unique circumstances, priorities and budget.
As this guide shows, providers differ in price, what they include as standard, their customer satisfaction scores, and whether they operate their own crematoria. These variations can have a real impact on both cost and the quality of care received.
By comparing providers across all these criteria, not just headline price, our article gives you the information you need to make an informed choice.
Whether price, locality, reputation or what's included matters most to you, we hope this guide has given you the confidence to choose the right direct cremation to meet your needs.
