Choosing the right funeral plan is more important than a free gift
A free gift can be a welcome bonus, but it should never be the primary reason for choosing a prepaid funeral plan. The most important thing is finding a plan that genuinely meets your needs, both now and in the future.
Free gift incentives are a tool designed to encourage a purchase. Whilst there’s nothing wrong with taking advantage of a good offer, choosing a plan based on the gift alone could mean overlooking a provider that better meets your needs.
When comparing funeral plans, there are many factors to consider, including:
- Price - is the funeral plan affordable, and does it represent genuine value?
- What's included - are all crematorium fees, removal of medical devices, delivery of ashes, collection of the deceased covered as standard?
- 24/7 availability - can you reach the provider at any time, day or night for support and guidance?
- Speed of collection - how quickly can the provider collect the deceased when the time comes?
- Customer service quality - does the provider have a strong, consistent customer feedback rating (for example Trustpilot) built over time?
- Crematorium coverage - does the provider have facilities local to you?
- Financial protection - is the provider regulated and FSCS-protected?
If you've compared providers and two plans are broadly similar across all of the above factors, a free gift incentive could be a perfectly good reason to choose one over the other.
Consider the free gift as a perk, but not a deciding factor.
Are free gifts offered with over 50s life insurance plans?
Free gift incentives are not unique to funeral plans, they’re also widely used in the over 50s life insurance market, often with higher gift values.
SunLife, one of the most recognisable names in the sector, currently offer a £140 Love2Shop gift card to new customers. Other providers such as Aviva (£200) and Legal & General (£120) offer similar incentives.
As with funeral plans, these gifts are designed to encourage a purchase and shouldn't be the primary reason for taking out a policy.
It's also worth considering which product is actually right for you. If your primary goal is to cover funeral costs and protect your family from rising prices, a prepaid funeral plan is usually the more suitable choice; locking in today's prices and guaranteeing the service will be provided.
