What to consider when looking for the cheapest funeral plan
We understand that choosing the right funeral cover isn't always straightforward.
The cheapest funeral plan may appeal to you now, but could end up costing your family more in the long run.
Before you purchase a funeral plan, you should make sure you understand the specific details of the plan, checking it covers all your needs.
In some cases, the plan may only cover a contribution towards funeral services. For example, not all providers will cover the cremation fee in full.
A Simplicity Cremations our low-cost prepaid funeral plan also includes 24/7 collection from the place of rest, while some providers will only offer collection Monday to Friday, during office hours.
Is your money protected?
Since July 2022, all funeral plan providers in the UK are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
This means all providers, such as Simplicity Cremations, must be transparent about costs, treat customers fairly, safeguard the money paid into plans and meet high standards of conduct.
Whether you pay by instalments or as a lump sum, your money is kept in a secure independent trust which is set up inline with FCA regulation.
It’s managed by independent trustees to ensure there are always enough funds available to cover your cremation, and the trust is reviewed annually by an independent expert.
You also have the protection of the Financial Services Compensation scheme (FSCS). Therefore should the worst happen and the funeral plan provider goes out of business, there are measures in place to protect your plan.
For example, your plan may be transferred to another funeral plan provider, or you’ll receive a refund.
Lastly, choosing a funeral plan through an National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) accredited provider gives you the reassurance of clear pricing, professional standards and ethical care, all backed by their independent code of practice.
Funeral cover comparison: A funeral plan or funeral insurance?
Many people consider funeral insurance, sometimes referred to as 'over 50s life insurance', as a means of paying for their funeral in advance.
An over 50s policy will provide a cash lump sum when you die, that can be used to help with funeral costs. However, it is important to note that the cash lump sum paid out by an insurance policy is fixed so inflation will likely reduce the value over time.
In some cases, people may have paid more in premiums than the fixed lump sum will paid out. There is no guarantee that the insurer will pay out the full funeral cost when the time comes.
As a result, we believe it is important to understand the benefits of paying for their funeral in advance with a prepaid funeral plan - locking in todays' rate.
In comparison to funeral insurance, a funeral plan can offer a better level of funeral cover. Rather than paying a lump sum following your death, prepaid funeral plans cover the cost of a pre-arranged funeral.
You choose the kind of funeral you’d like, and the provider will supply a package that will cover funeral costs, often including the service, coffin, transportation and other related costs.
A payment plan is agreed and once the plan has been paid for, no further instalments are required. Following your death, the provider will take care of the funeral arrangements.
Choose a funeral plan that suits your budget and final wishes
At Simplicity, we believe that a low-cost funeral plan shouldn't mean substandard service. As with most providers, we offer various levels of service inclusions and costs.
Firstly, choose if you’d like anyone to attend your funeral. If not, our direct cremation without a service could be a great option.
