Are funeral plans regulated and is my money protected?

Yes. Since 2022, all prepaid funeral plan providers are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). That means providers such as Simplicity Cremations must follow certain rules to keep your money safe.

Whether you pay by instalments or in a lump sum, your money is kept in a secure independent trust which is set up in line with FCA regulation. It’s managed by independent trustees to ensure there are always enough funds available for your cremation, and the trust is reviewed by an independent expert every year.

You also have the protection of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). This means that should the worst happen and the plan provider goes out of business, there are measures in place to protect your plan. For example, your plan may be transferred to another funeral plan provider, or you’ll receive a refund.

What are the usual ‘hidden fees’ in a funeral plan?

Good question. At Simplicity Cremations we don’t do hidden fees, but some providers may charge extra for things like:

• Urgent collection - if the person died in a place without a mortuary
• Removal of a medical device - for example, if the person had a pacemaker
• Delivering the ashes - if you would like to scatter them yourself or keep them close to home

With a Simplicity Cremations funeral plan, all of these things are covered, so there’s nothing more for your loved ones to pay.

Can I buy a funeral plan for someone else?

Yes, you can arrange a funeral plan on behalf of someone else. It’s a helpful way to ensure their wishes are respected and future funeral costs are covered. Some people buy plans for their parents; other people buy one plan for themself and another for their partner.

The person you’re buying a plan for must be over 18. We’ll ask for their name, date of birth, address and contact details when you set up the plan. It can be useful to inform them about the plan, but you don’t have to.

Can I get a joint funeral plan?

No, funeral plans can’t be taken out jointly. Unlike life insurance which can be taken out on a joint basis, a funeral plan can only cover one individual. Separate plans are required if you’re arranging funeral cover for two people.

Who can buy a funeral plan?

While many only consider taking out a funeral plan in later life, they’re available to any UK resident aged 18 or over.

Can I cancel my funeral plan, and are there any fees?

Yes, absolutely. You have the right to cancel your plan at any time, without giving us a reason.

If you’ve paid in full and cancel within 30 days of purchasing your plan, we’ll provide a full refund. If you cancel after 30 days, we will refund your payments less our £300 cancellation fee.

If you pay by instalments and cancel within 24 months of purchasing your plan, we’ll provide a full refund of all payments made. If you cancel after 24 months, we will refund the payments you have made less our £300 cancellation fee.

What happens if funeral costs rise in the future?

When you take out a Simplicity Cremations funeral plan you lock in the cost of the services at today’s prices. Therefore, if funeral costs rise in the future you won’t have to pay more for the elements covered by your plan.

What are the different types of funeral plans

Whilst many providers package their different plans with various product names, ultimately there are 3 main types of funeral plans available in the UK:

• Burial funeral plans - include a traditional attended service followed by burial
• Cremation funeral plans - include an attended service at a crematorium
• Direct cremation plans - the most affordable option, with no service or mourners present

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a funeral plan?

Advantages

• Protects against rising costs - You pay at today’s prices, so the key services in your plan stay fixed even if funeral costs increase in future
• Reduces financial pressure on loved ones - Major funeral expenses are prepaid, meaning your family has little or nothing to pay at the time
• Provides clarity and peace of mind - Your wishes are documented in advance, removing uncertainty and difficult decisions for your family
• Financial protection - The FCA now regulate the funeral plans sector ensuring providers meet the required duty of care for consumers. What’s more, your money is also protected by the FSCS

Disadvantages

• You may pay more overall if choosing long‑term instalments. Monthly instalment plans lasting more than two years can come with additional charges, making the total cost higher than paying upfront
• Cancellation fees or limits may apply - Plans can usually be cancelled, but some providers charge administration fees after a set period

Can people attend a Simplicity Cremation?

No, family and friends can’t attend a Simplicity Cremation; direct cremations are unattended and don’t include a service for mourners.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a service at all. Lots of people choose to remember someone in a place that feels more meaningful to the person who has died.

For example, some people may choose to arrange a service in their local place of worship, others plan a celebration of life or a gathering to scatter the ashes.
