How to arrange a low cost funeral service
With the cost of the average funeral in the UK now exceeding £4000*, more and more people are searching for ways to organise the least expensive funeral. There are many ways you can save on funeral costs, but where do you start? Our guide will help you understand how to arrange a low cost funeral.
How to save on funeral costs
Each and every one of us is unique, and a funeral allows an opportunity to reflect that. Not everyone wants a full service funeral and many do not see the value in some of the more traditional aspects.
The best way to start to save on funeral costs is to do your research, understand where your costs are potentially going to come from and find less expensive alternatives. Most of this cost will be charges from a Funeral Director. Funeral Directors work hard to provide the service you ask for which is reflected in their final cost.
An increasingly common way to save on funeral costs is to arrange a funeral without the assistance of a Funeral Director or even arrange a DIY funeral. Alternatively, you could look at providers which strip back the services to only those that you want and need.
Other main costs come from:
- Floral tributes
- Burial plot charges
- Third party costs
Decide on cremation or burial
Arranging a cremation will typically cost less than a burial, so if funeral costs are a concern, you’d be best placed choosing a cremation. Learn more about the differences in cost between cremation and burial.
Choose a low cost funeral service provider
Savings on funeral costs is largely dependent on your provider. A Simplicity Cremation provides you with all of the practical elements of the funeral, while allowing you the freedom to organise the funeral service as you wish. We have removed some of the most expensive elements including hearses, limousines and pallbearers, which means we can provide our funeral services for considerably less than other providers.
All of our funeral packages include the cremation fees and doctor’s fees, something not all providers will cover, provision of a simple coffin, transportation in a specialised funeral vehicle and care at one of our high quality mortuaries.
Unfortunately, not all low cost funeral providers will operate to the same standards or include the same services. It is advisable to choose a provider with an established history and access to the right facilities.
Unlike many providers who will only operate within a specific area or may charge a fee outside of a certain radius, our services are available throughout the whole of mainland Great Britain.

What’s the cheapest funeral you offer?
The cheapest funeral we offer is our unattended funeral; a direct cremation which takes place without a service beforehand without any mourners present.
Starting at £995, our unattended funeral allows you to plan whatever you like before or after the cremation whilst we take care of the practicalities, from collecting your loved one, caring for and preparing them for cremation to respectfully scattering their ashes in our beautiful gardens of remembrance.
Some of our clients have requested that the ashes be returned** and have organised memorials or a celebration of life at a time more convenient to themselves and their loved ones.
** Ashes can be returned upon request for an additional charge.
Low cost funeral services that you can attend
Our attended funeral lets you arrange a family-led ceremony that suits you and your budget, with no limit on the number of attendees. Our funeral arrangers can help you with organising the running order of the day from any music or hymns, to any readings or eulogies. You will also need to decide who you’d like to lead the service.
If you are looking for something a little more low key then our intimate funeral might be the right choice for you. As with all our funeral services, we’ll take care of your loved one and ensure they are safely transported to the crematorium where we will allow attendance for up to 12 people to spend a short time in the chapel prior to the cremation. We know that often families prefer a smaller, shorter funeral to pay their respects and take a few moments to reflect.
The return of ashes is included within the price of our attended and intimate funeral. Read more about our funeral prices.
Without several face to face meetings with a Funeral Director, a procession with limousines and a hearse, and some of the other costly elements of a traditional funeral, we can offer low cost funeral options with the focus on the goodbye itself.
